Harry Frederick Loehrke, Jr. The greatest generation lost two great members on April 17, 2018. Along with Barbara Bush, Harry Frederick Loehrke Jr., affectionately known as “Mike,” departed this world at his home in the company of loved ones. Mike was born in Toledo, Ohio to Harry F. and Laura (Goetz) Loehrke on July 29, 1921.

He graduated from Libbey High School in 1939 and then the University of Toledo with a degree in Electrical Engineering and an MBA in Management. He enlisted… Read More » in the Army Air Corps, served as a Second Lieutenant and Navigator/Radio Operator on a B-29 during World War Two. Mike spent his career at Owens-Illinois serving as a physicist, Chief of New Development, Personnel Director of the Technical Center, Technical Center Facilities Manager, Manager of Administrative Services and Manager of Craft Services.

He held several patents relating to glass and its uses. His hobbies and interests included planning family vacations, genealogy, technology, photography, UT athletics, the UT Downtown Coaches and Detroit Tigers Baseball. While growing up, his family worshipped at St. Lucas Lutheran Church, and he later served as an Elder at Westminster Presbyterian Church and Glendale Presbyterian Churches.

Mike and his high-school-sweetheart wife, Joan (Wright) Loehrke, celebrated sixty-five years of marriage before her passing in 2009. Together they enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, and attending events involving their three children, six grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. This generations, kind man will be lovingly remembered by his children, Craig (Mary) Loehrke, Susan (Charles) Bolanis, and Ann (Richard) Evans, six devoted grandchildren and their spouses, fourteen great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, as well as sister-in-law, Dorothy Beyer, and cousin, Mary Beth (James) Walz.

His parents, wife Joan, and brothers Raymond and Herbert preceded him. The family will receive guests from 3-6 PM on Friday, May 4, at Walter Funeral Home on Glendale Avenue and Saturday morning from 10:00-10:45 at Zion United Methodist Church, 2600 Copland Blvd. , Toledo, Ohio.

A Memorial Service will follow at 11:00 AM at the church with Pastor ‘Debo Onabanjo officiating. Burial will be private. The family extends thanks to the doctors, nurses, and caregivers (Beth, Debbie, Sally, Heather, Nichole, Michael and Karin) who worked so hard to maintain Mike’s quality of life.

Memorial donations may be made to Glendale Presbyterian Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
