Harry (Scott) Maurice Scotland was born September 26, 1935 to Dorothy Lillian Ruhland and Harry Fred Scotland in Buffalo, NY. What can we say about our Dad? He was a man of great character, honest, blunt at times, and a lot of fun to be with.
One of his first jobs was making buttons, and his stories about living in WW2 times were both fascinating and unreal. He talked often about the big war ships coming into the Great Lakes through the Erie Canal while riding his bike. They would come in and dump their oil in the lake.
Ever a man of accepting a challenge, he jumped in on a dare, and came out coal black from head to toe. He met Grandma at the door with lye soap and a scrub brush in her hand. Needless to say he never made the same mistake again.
He fought in the Korean War. He was a tank driver, combat engineer, I&R and back up sniper. He enlisted while still a teenager and at the end of his service in Korea he was stationed at Dugway, which seemed like the end of the earth for him.
He was a good provider and very ambitious. He worked long days and finished school by taking classes at night. He worked for Eimco for over 40 years.
He traveled a lot in this job setting up businesses in many countries. He has been to more countries and experienced more cultures than anyone we know. He met our beautiful “foxy” red headed mother Donna Lee Holt, who is 12 years his junior.
They eloped July 6, 1969 before he went on a business trip to Savanah Georgia. My parents love each other dearly. It is comforting for us to know how much he honored our mother and loved his kids and grandchildren.
He was very fair with us kids. In everything he did he had a lesson built in the lecture. I remember him even training us on how to use a fire extinguisher!
He loved hunting with our Grandpa, uncles, cousins and friends. Hunting was really just a way to get together and build lasting memories. He taught us to be honest, to stand up for what is right and be proud we are Scotlands.
His motto will live on forever, “Never Fear, Scotland’s here! ” He is survived by his wife, Donna Lee Holt Scotland, his siblings, Jim (Kathy) Scotland, Suzy (Lee) McGranahan, and Dorothy Hanson of Buffalo, NY, his children, Lorrie (Gary) Hadley, Peggy (Steve) Hadley, Larry (Kelly) Patterson, Amy (Jim) Allen, and Matthew (Camille) Scotland, and his 5 grandchildren, Cameron, Cassandra, Braxton Scott, Hailey Allen and Faith Scotland. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at Goff Mortuary, 8090 S. State Street, Midvale, Utah.
A viewing will be held 1 hour prior to the service.
