Obituary for Harry Schatmeyer Harry Schatmeyer, Jr., passed away November 1, 2018. Harry was originally from northern New Jersey, but also lived in Piermont, New York and Newport, Rhode Island. He was born July 28th, 1942 to parents Fahmie and Harry Schatmeyer, Sr. and was married to two beautiful women: to Susan Christine Schatmeyer, the mother of his children Harry III, Simon, and Kirsten; and to Cheryl Gainer Schatmeyer, grandmother to his six grandchildren, Sam, Charlie, Jakob, Morgan, Vanessa, and Harry.

As a young man, Harry liked to work on cars with his friends, and he played high school football as an offensive lineman. Each summer, he traveled to Holland with his mother to visit with his extended family. After he graduated from Hawthorne High School, he attended Seton Hall University and graduated with a degree in English.

Harry served our country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was initially stationed at Fort Jackson, Georgia, where he rose to the rank of sergeant, and became an M-16 rifle marksman. As a Signal Corp Instructor, Harry taught young men to communicate during battle using Morse Code and other secretive methods.

Harry was a McDonald’s executive, President’s Award Winner, and owner/operator for many years, owning several restaurants in the northern New Jersey area, including the two highest volume McDonald’s sites in the state located along the Garden State Parkway. Later, he owned and operated two historic luxury bed and breakfast hotels in Newport, Rhode Island. Harry always enjoyed working and being an entrepreneur, and he read the Wall Street Journal and New York Times nearly every day.

He enjoyed playing cards, traveling, visiting with his family, and watching his six grandchildren grow up. He loved living here in the lowcountry with his family. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
