Obituary for Helen Aletha Moerland Helen Aletha Moerland, 91, passed away quietly Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at Munson Medical Center surrounded by her family. She was born in Rosebush to parents Leroy M. and Gladys M. (Benedict) Whitney on October 6, 1927. Helen married the love of her life I. Lee Moerland on May 18, 1951 in Grand Rapids, MI, who preceded her in death on March 31, 2006.

They celebrated over fifty-four years of marriage together. She resided in Charlevoix, MI for over thirty years, before snow birding in Florida for eight years and finally moving to Florida for eighteen years. She returned to Michigan in June 2016 to live in Traverse City.

Helen was blessed with a beautiful soprano voice and she graced many lives with her singing. She had a passion for classical music and taught voice lessons. She found enjoyment in reading, shopping, going to music concerts, volunteering with the United Methodist Church in Charlevoix, spending time with her family and friends, and spending many summers on Thumb Lake.

Helen is survived by her son Timothy (Mandi) Moerland of Indiana, PA and their children Hanna and Daniel; daughter Karrilee (Richard) Walter of Traverse City, and her son Lee (Kim) Moerland; and brother Donald (Elanor) Whitney of Caledonia, ; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Janice Winchell; brothers James Whitney and Ralph Whitney. A memorial service to celebrate Helen will follow next summer at the Chapel of the Lake Louise Christian Community on Thumb Lake in Boyne Falls.

Helen wished to provide a pipe organ music concert to the Traverse City community, which is to follow at a later date. She will be interred at Fairplains Cemetery in Grand Rapids next to her husband.
