Helen Owen June 12, 1918 – July 20, 2018 It is with great sadness that the family of Helen Owen announces her passing on July 20, 2018, just a few short weeks after a big party celebrating her 100th birthday. Helen was born on June, 12, 1918 in Williston, North Dakota and was one of seven children. She moved to California in her teens and embarked on a lifetime of hospitality both in and outside her home.
She married William Owen July 3, 1949. They had five children and were… Read More » together 68 years until his passing in December 2017. In her youth she spoke of working landmarks such as the Downtown Sacramento Elks Club, and the La Avenida Cafe in Coronado.
But her greatest joy was taking care of her home and children. The door was always open to the neighborhood kids, friends and family. One thing for sure, no-one ever left hungry and usually had a bag of something to take home.
After the kids were older she went back to work full-time. Food always being her passion, she worked in the SMUD cafeteria then, retired as a Cook from Sacramento County Juvenile Hall. After retirement she cooked for the priests at St. Mary’s, something she thoroughly enjoyed until she was 90.
Helen was an angel on earth, loved by everyone she ever met. She is survived by her daughters, Christine, Leuenda, and Diana, her son Douglas, her grand-children, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, as well as two sisters. In heaven Helen is reuniting with her husband William, son Robert, grand-daughter Wendy, her parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Memorial Services will be held Friday, July 27, 2018, Rosary at 10:00 a.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 at St. Mary’s Parish, 1333 58th Street, Sacramento. Committal will follow at East Lawn Memorial Park, 4300 Folsom Blvd, Sacramento. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
