Helen Manthey January 09, 1930 – May 20, 2019 Share this obituary Send Sympathy Gifts Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card| Memorial Donation Memorial service for Helen Louise Manthey, 89, of Hoyt Lakes will be 1 pm Friday, May 31, 2019 at the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora with Pastor Peter Bartlett officiating. A visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Inurnment will be in the Hoyt Lakes Memorial Cemetery.

Helen died Monday, May 20, 2019 at Spectrum Carefree Living in Aurora. She was born on January 9, 1930 to Ralph and Charlotte (Park) Mickelson in Aurora, IL. Helen’s family moved to Ironwood, MI when she was a teenager.

She graduated from Luther L. Wright High School, Class of 1947 in Ironwood, MI. Following high school, Helen worked at several jobs including Patik’s Petiet Shop, Gogenic National Bank, JC Penny, and the Child Guidance Clinic in Ironwood. She was united in marriage to Donald Manthey on December 25, 1949 in Ironwood.

She and her husband co-founded the Gogebic County Association for Special Needs Children in Ironwood. The couple moved to Duluth in 1959 and later to Hoyt Lakes in 1964. Helen loved living in Hoyt Lakes.

She was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church in Hoyt Lakes, a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary, and the American Cancer Society. She was also a member of the American Legion in Aurora and the former Aurora Moose Lodge Auxiliary. She served on the Hoyt Lakes Golf Commission and as an Election Judge.

She had worked at the Biwabik Times and Range Facts and reported the “East Range News” for WKKQ. Helen enjoyed golfing, camping and bowling and had coached for junior and senior bowling leagues. She also enjoyed knitting and reading.

Helen will be remembered as a devoted wife and mother who took the greatest pleasure in her grandchildren. Survivors include two children: Susan (Brad Fontaine) Almquist of Embarrass and David (Sheila) Manthey of Roseau; three grandchildren: Eric (Jen Wudinich) Almquist of Biwabik, Amanda (Jesse) Froseth of Salol, MN, and Dillon Manthey of Roseau; two great-grandchildren: Emma and Grace; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; son, James Edward; siblings: Dorothy Erickson and Robert and Paul Mickelson; a nephew, Danny Mickelson; son-in-law, Robert Almquist; and her parents.
