Rev. Herbert Birner, Em. , 102 of Indian River passed away on May 22, 2018 at his home in Indian River.

Herbert was born on January 20, 1916 in Mena, Arkansas, the son of Adolph Birner and Amanda (Leuders) Birner. He grew up in Hendricks, MN and attended Martin Luther High School. After graduation went on to North Western College before attending Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary.

Herbert served on many different committees and boards in the Dakota Montana District and Northern Conference President of the Michigan District, as well as serving as a Reverend in many different cities. He started in Faulkton Ipswich, SD, then moved to Estelline, SD where he met Garnet Ball who would later become his wife. The couple wed in 1953 in St. Paul, MN.

They later relocated to Sioux Falls, SD where they started their family. After that they relocated to Mobridge, SD, then to Burton, MI from where he retired. During the period of his retirement, Herbert filled various vacancies in churches.

It was this that caused the couple to later make their home in Indian River. Herbert served as a Reverend at Hope Lutheran Church in Indian river for two years. He was an avid reader and enjoyed reading anything and everything.

Herbert is survived by his wife Garnet Birner, children Philip (Sue) Birner, Peter (Janet) Birner, Nicolas (Karen) Birner, Paul Birner, and John (Kate) Birner, eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and six siblings. Services for Herbert will be held on Friday, May 25, 2018 at Hope Lutheran Church in Indian River.

Visitation will be run from 10am-11am, funeral at 11am.
