Flag Braintree, MA – Herbert E. Pope, 96, a longtime resident of Braintree, passed on to the Lord surrounded by his family on October 24th, 2018. He was born in Dorchester in 1922 to the late Ernest and Elsie Pope and was a graduate of Rosendale High School. He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy (Burke) Pope and devoted father to his three children; Andrea and her husband Juan Antonio Gil of Weymouth, the late Brian H. Pope and his granddaughter Nicole and great-granddaughter Aliyah Rule of Cape Cod.

He is survived by his ex-wife Rose (Melin) Pope, son Matthew and daughter-in-law Vanessa and his three grandsons, Benjamin, Spencer and Owen of Tampa FL. He was predeceased by his sister May Benoit of California and his brother Edward Pope of Illinois. Herb grew up through the Great Depression and supported his family as the eldest child after losing his father at the age of 16.

He later entered the army and served In World War II as a technician – 4th grade in the engineers section, stationed at Ladd Army Field – Fairbanks Alaska. During his service there as Fire Chief, he and his men saved the town from a devastating fire. After returning from the war, he moved to Braintree in 1952 with his wife Dorothy.

For 24 years he worked at Stone & Webster in purchasing and at the age of 42 to further advance his career, he moved to Charles T. Main where he worked for an additional 22 years and became the first non-engineering Vice President in the company’s history. In addition to his full time job he also worked as a part time realtor by starting his own Real Estate Company, Forest Street Realty. In 1959 he joined the South Congregational Church of Braintree where he served as the Super Attendant of the Sunday school, was on the Board of Deacons, Chairman of the Trustees, and Moderator on a continuing basis for over 50 years.

He was actively involved in Toast Masters & Dale Carnegie for many years which attributed to his quick sense of humor. He gave back to the community through his work with the Braintree PTA and coaching of little league. As an avid golfer and bowler, to which he involved his children, he often wished he could exchange his scoring averages one for the other.

Herb was a devoted son and actively cared for his mother until her passing at the age of 103. He was a good and kind hearted person who will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all who knew him. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a funeral service to be held at South Congregational Church, 1075 Washington St. South Braintree, MA from 11am to 12pm on Saturday October 27th.

Visiting is from 10am to 11am prior. Pastor Scott Killian of South Congregational Church will officiate. Arrangements by Russ Peck, Jr. Donations may be made to the South Congregational Church – memorial fund.
