Obituary for Herbert “Herb” Falk Herbert “Herb” Falk, age 87 died peacefully on June 23, 2018 in Barrington, IL. He was born on March 5, 1931 in what is now Bad Schonborn, Germany. With the impending start of WWII, he immigrated to America with his grandmother and uncle, leaving on one of the last ships out of Germany.

They arrived in America in December 1938. He was raised on his uncle’s farm in Cary, where Herb first learned to drive Farmall tractors. A few years after graduating from Crystal Lake Community High School, he enlisted in the Army, serving in Japan.

After his honorable discharge in 1956, he soon met the love of his life at a mutual friend’s wedding. He and Claire Ossanna were married on July 6, 1957, and they had nearly 61 loving, happy years together. They settled in Algonquin, and went on to have 4 children.

Herb started his own business in 1962. Falk Door & Window evolved into Falk-Hagerty Door Sales, which evolved into Herb’s Door Service, which is still in business today. Herb, Claire and the family enjoyed many vacations together.

Herb & Claire continued their love of traveling into their 60s and 70s. They were fortunate to make several trips back to his hometown, where he still has friends there. He was a member (and eventual president) of the Algonquin Lions Club.

He also served on the board for what was then the Lions Armstrong Memorial Pool, and was a member of Ducks Unlimited. He was a coach for his daughters’ softball teams. In 1999 he was a founding member of the McHenry County Antique Tractors Club.

He was a nearly 40 year member of SS Peter & Paul Church in Cary. Among his many talents, Herb was a wonderful cook and a skilled carpenter. But like all good husbands and fathers, he enjoyed family time the most.

He will be missed by all those who knew and loved him. He is survived by his loving wife Claire, his daughter Anne (Steven) Barth, his daughter Karen (Scott) Lankford, and his son James (Sandra Castaneda). His is also survived by his grandchildren Amy, Lisa, Matthew, and Alexander, and his great-grandchildren Antonette (Toni), Karolina, Kaylie, and Ellie, along with many friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter at birth and a son Steven. The family wishes to thank the staff at ComForCare Home Care and Journey Care who assisted Herb in his final months. Visitation will be from 9:30-11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 26, 2018, at SS Peter Paul Church, 401 N. First St, in Cary, with a Funeral Mass immediately following.
