Obituary for Herman Charles Proffer Herman Charles Proffer, a generous, compassionate teacher, mentor and talented artist who inspired students and peers with his dedication and tireless pursuits related to clay, collage and artistic collaboration, died of natural causes on June 13th. He was 88. During his 32 years of public school teaching, Charlie spent most of his career at McCluer High School in Ferguson-Florissant, Missouri, where he chaired a department of 18 art teachers.
The department flourished, covering all mediums and enjoying a great deal of freedom to push the boundaries of education. He mentored and challenged his students to take risks, supporting graduates to pursue their passions into college, many of whom benefited from art scholarships due to Charlie’s support and guidance. The environment Charlie fostered was one full of energy, hard work and artful expression.
Art was never an afterthought, it was just as important as the traditional curriculum. His professional team’s classes were meant to drive design and its connection and purpose to the greater world. Charlie’s humble demeanor coupled with a kind, collaborative spirit proved to foster relationships with everyone he came into contact with, making everyone feel welcome and heard.
In addition to enjoying a meaningful teaching career, Charlie enjoyed a successful personal artistic career, primarily as a ceramist. He was sought after and supported by numerous gallerists from Martha’s Vineyard to Palm Desert. Additionally, he was recognized and awarded frequently for his talent, by foundries and expert judges.
Herman Charles Proffer was born on February 12, 1930, to parents Lillie Mae and Earl Proffer. Aside from two years away in the army and six years at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where he received his Masters degree, Charlie spent his life in Dupo, Illinois, along with his brother and good friend Clinton and family. Charlie married Joan Thompson in 1961.
As best friends, they lived 57 years of life together to its fullest. Their notorious house parties brought together incredible friends to share laughter. They created art together, traveled extensively, and built a home and a loving family.
Joan and his daughter, Julie, will miss him dearly. As will his extended family and friends. Visitation will be on Friday, June 29, 2018 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Leesman Funeral Home in Dupo, IL.
Services will be held on Friday, June 29, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Leesman Funeral Home in Dupo, IL. , with Fr. Linus Umoren, officiating.
Inurnment will follow in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO. , full military honors. The family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions be directed to Donor’s Choice.
