Life Story for Hugh “Toby” Haynsworth III Dr. Hugh “Toby” Charles Haynsworth, III passed away after a short illness on September 12, 2018 in Rock Hill, SC. He was born on June 8, 1933 in Long Beach, California. The oldest child of the late Hugh Charles Haynsworth Jr. and Marguerite Cuttino Haynsworth.

Toby married his wife, Martha Muriel Bragg in 1957. He joined the United States Navy in 1953 and as a lieutenant was sent to Spain under the auspice of the United States Embassy. Being fluent in Spanish, he was instrumental in the United States presence in Europe during the Cold War.

He retired as Commander Supply Corp in 1975 and decided to pursue a career in finance which was his passion. He studied at Clemson University and received a degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Management Science in 1981. He went on to teach at Winthrop University as a Professor of Quantitative Methods with the Department of Computer Science and Quantitative Methods in the College of Business Administration.

He retired in 1998. Toby co-authored 2 books with J. Edward Lee: White Christmas in April: The Collapse of South Vietnam, 1975 and Nixon, Ford and the Abandonment of South Vietnam. He was also interviewed frequently on broadcast public television and featured in The Soldier’s Story by Ron Steinman.

He was a philanthropist, mentor and political activist. He enjoyed participating in and watching all kinds of sports, especially the Clemson Tigers. He loved to travel and play golf.

Toby was preceded in death by his son, Hugh Charles Haynsworth IV. He is survived by his loving wife, Martha Bragg Haynsworth; son, Samuel Moore Haynsworth; sister, Marguerite “Peggy” Haynsworth Wheelock; and many other family and friends. A memorial service will be held at All Nations Church, 360 Hammond Rd, Fort Mill, SC on Wednesday, Sept 26th, 2018 at 2:00 pm with a reception immediately following.
