Irwin H. Beck, long time Empire resident, died age 91, on May 15, 2019 at Munson Medical Center. Irwin was born on October 2, 1927. He was a member of the Empire United Methodist Church.

He served in the United States Army in Tokyo, Japan at the 49th General Hospital as a laboratory technologist. Mr. Beck served as the district governor of the Empire Lions Club; he was a member for 60 years. He was also a member of the American Legion for 63 years with the post #199 in Leelanau County.

Irwin was married to Lillian for 60 years before she passed in 2008. Mr. Beck enjoyed working on the farm for over 62 years. He could always be found with a hoe in his hand.

He also worked for James R. Johnson Case Company as a mechanic. Irwin is survived by his children Ellis Beck of Georgia, Judy (Terry) Gage of Cedar Springs, Vicki (Karl) Schultz of Interlochen and Keith (Sandra) Beck of Horsham, PA; 10 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. The memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at 11:00 am with visitation beginning at 10:00 am at the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home.

He will be laid to rest at 12:30 pm at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Empire where he will receive full military honors. After the cemetery, a luncheon will be held at the Empire United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be directed to Lions Club for their support of the blind.
