James Scott Painter, 57, of St. Petersburg, went to be with the Lord Tuesday afternoon, October 2, 2018 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. Scott was born in Cape Fear Valley, North Carolina on July 23, 1961. He was the son of Joseph L. Painter of Callensburg and Marilyn D. Wilson Painter of St. Petersburg.
He was a 1979 graduate of Allegheny-Clarion Valley High School in Foxburg. In his earlier years he was employed by the Wolf’s Campground and the Wolf’s Den in Knox and was employed for more than 30 years with Merisol Antioxidants LLC in Rouseville. Scott had served on the rapid response team for the U.S. Steelworker’s Union.
Scott was an active member of Grace E.C. Church in Knox where he taught Sunday School and served on the mission committee. He had a passion for the people of Haiti and the Dominican Republic and was active in organizing mission trips for more than 20 years with Hope for Hispaniola Missions. Scott enjoyed a special relationship with many of the people he met on his mission trips, and had established long lasting friendships, especially with his interpreters, Pamela and Stephanie, whom he affectionately referred to as “his daughters”.
Scott was a history buff, and was especially interested in local history and genealogy and had begun writing several books on local history. He was an avid photographer. He enjoyed camping on the Clarion River and hunting, especially rabbit hunting with his friend, Don.
He was a member of the Clarion County Republican Party and enjoyed talking politics with friends and neighbors. He had served on the St. Petersburg Borough Council. Scott was a 32nd degree mason and Past Master of the former Canby Lodge and belonged to the Parker Allegheny Canby Lodge #521 F&AM and The Consistory Valley of New Castle.
Surviving is his wife, Robin L. Wenner Painter, whom he married at Grace E.C. Church on July 26, 1986. Also surviving is a daughter, Mariah L. Painter of Pittsburgh, his mother, Marilyn D. Wilson Painter of St. Petersburg, his father and step mother, Joseph L. and Cindy L. Painter of Callensburg, his brother, J. Shawn Painter of St. Petersburg, his mother-in-law, Patricia L. Wenner of Knox, his brothers and sisters-in-law, Rhonda and John Hannold of Cranberry, Ronald and Wendy Wenner of Emlenton, and Roger Wenner of Knox; as well as a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. Scott was preceded in death by a daughter, Whitney L. Painter, who died on March 23, 1991, his father-in-law, Gary Wenner, a brother-in-law, Randy Wenner, his paternal grandparents, J. Russell and Leona Painter, and his maternal grandparents, James and Hazel Wilson.
Friends will be received at the Hile Funeral Home Inc., 802 Grove St., St. Petersburg, from 1 – 3 and 6 – 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Grace E.C . Church, 2561 Grace Church Rd. , Knox, where a funeral service will follow from the church at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev.
Richard L. Osberg, church pastor, and the Rev. Lewis Bennett, associate pastor, officiating. Interment will be at Starr Cemetery, Knox.
Memorial contributions may be given to Grace E.C. Church, 2651 Grace Church Rd. , Knox, PA 16232 or to Hope for Hispaniola Missions, PO Box 92, Zelienople, PA 16063. Members of the Parker Allegheny Canby Lodge #521, F&AM will conduct a memorial service for their departed brother at 8:45 p.m. Friday.
