Rutledge, age 80, of Tuscaloosa, Ala. , passed away Thursday, January 24, 2019, at Hospice of West Alabama. Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 29, 2019, at First Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa at 12:00 p.m. with a private family burial to follow.

Visitation will be at the church Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at 12:00 p.m. with Tuscaloosa Memorial Park and Chapel directing. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Fay Lancaster Rutledge and Woodrow Amos Rutledge. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Norma Wilson Rutledge; sons, Timothy Alan Rutledge (Jeana) and David Terrell Rutledge (Kelley); sister: Donna Swope Wood; grandchildren, Audra Cobble (David), Keith Rutledge (Sophia), Kaley Lee, Kurt Rutledge (Caitlyn) and Forrest Harvey.

Jack was born in Gadsden, Alabama on May 24, 1938. He graduated from Woodlawn High School and was recruited by the University of Alabama, where he played his freshman year. When Coach Bryant came to the University in 1958, Jack was redshirted for that season.

He went on to letter in football during the 1959-1961 seasons. He was fortunate enough to be a part of five National Championship teams – 1961 as a player; 1972, 1978, and 1979 as a coach; and 1992 as the director of Bryant Hall, the athletic dorm. He was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church Choir, served two terms as a deacon, and was president of his Sunday school class.

Jack was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and will be greatly missed. Pallbearers will be: Keith Rutledge, Kurt Rutledge, Forrest Harvey, Terry King, Berry Swope, Wade Swope, Chuck Brand and Joe Donald. Honorary pallbearers will be: JoDel and Harvey Edwards, Madelyn and Bert Jones, Nancy Atkins, Mary Kate and Walt Densmore, Dian and Max Wilson, Nancy and Bobby Johnson, Dr. Gary White, Dian and Bill McDonald, the Good Samaritan Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church, and the University of Alabama A-Club members.

Special thanks for the loving care given to Jack by Dr. John Summerford, Dr. Jack Smalley, and special caretakers, Gwen McMikle and Roy Ball. A very special thanks to Betty Wilson King, Jack’s sister-in-law. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Alabama A-Club Foundation or First Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa.
