James D. “Jim” Corliss, 79, of South St., died Monday, June 4, 2018 at the Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility in Greenfield. Jim was born in Greenfield on September 22, 1938 the son of Ralph and Marjorie (Summers) Corliss, Sr He was a graduate of the former Arms Academy as a member of the class of 1958.

A talented athlete in high school, he was awarded a full football scholarship to a Division 1 school but declined to stay home to work and start a family. After graduating from Arms, Jim began working for Lamson & Goodnow Cutlery in Shelburne Falls. He learned to operate many different machines over the years and was a drop forger when he retired in 2000.

He worked at Lamson & Goodnow for 42 years. On December 18, 1965 Jim was married to the former Janice Temple, together for 52 years. Jim was a proud member of the Shelburne Falls Fire Department for 40 years and retired as Deputy Fire Chief.

He was a member of the Mohawk Football Coaching Staff for over 20 years and was instrumental in building and developing the Mohawk Little League Baseball program. Jim loved sports and wanted to help kids learn and enjoy all that team sports could offer. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting and fishing.

Survivors beside his wife Janice include his two sons and their families; David, his wife Kaitlin and their children Jordyn and Gabriel of Buckland, son Dan, his wife Sarah and their children Ella, Hank and Hugh of Granby, MA, an “adopted” son Brian Postera of Turners Falls, two sisters; Donna Miller (Arnold) of Colrain, Linda Sherrin (Francis) of West Palm Beach, FL and nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his brother Ralph Corliss, Jr. who died while on active duty with the US Air Force and his niece Courtney Sherrin. A graveside service will take place Saturday, June 9 at 11:00 am at the West Branch Cemetery in Colrain.
