Obituary for James J. Sanyi Sr. James J. Sanyi, Sr., 95, widower of Theresa Linchinsky Sanyi died Saturday, December 29, 2018 at Embrace Hospice House in Myrtle Beach after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born September 18, 1923, in Carteret, New Jersey, he was a son of the late Stephen Sanyi and the late Julia Balogh Sanyi. Mr. Sanyi served in the U.S. Navy aboard a destroyer during World War II in the Pacific as a Gunner’s Mate.

Following the completion of his service, James met his wife Theresa, and they were happily married for sixty-seven years. He retired after 42 years as a professional truck driver and resided with his wife in Sumter for 28 years before her passing. Survivors include three children, Lorraine Chelbian (Slade) of Clayton, NC, Darlene Moore (Richard) of McComb, MS, and James J. Sanyi, Jr. (Mary Ann) of Awendaw; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dr. Bob Calvert officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of SC, 140 Stoneridge Dr #210, Columbia, SC 29210. Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
