James “Jim” Patrick Cain, age 78, died Friday morning, July 20, 2018 at his home in Norwalk. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. followed by a prayer and rosary service at 7 p.m. Monday, July 23rd at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Norwalk. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 24th at the church.

Burial will be in the Norwalk Cemetery following the luncheon. Jim’s Life Story Jim, the son of John Clement and Caroline Agnes (nee: Kelly) Cain, was born December 28, 1939 near Orilla, IA.

Jim grew up near Churchville, IA and attended Martensdale Schools graduating in 1958. He then continued his education at Drake University majoring in Physical Education with a minor in Math, and later earning his master’s degree in Counseling from the University of South Dakota. Jim worked as a high school teacher at Bayard and later at Ar-We-Va Schools where he met his soon to be wife, Mary Ann Fangman.

They were married on October 6, 1972 and together raised two daughters, Kelly and Kristine. Soon after their marriage they moved to their home in Norwalk. Jim taught math and algebra.

Later he became a high school counselor retiring in 2000. Jim coached Norwalk High School Girls Basketball, during which time his team won the 1981 State Championship. He was a 1975 Charter Member of the Norwalk Lions Club, where he served three times as president.

He was very involved with KidSight traveling to local area schools testing preschool age children’s eyes. Jim’s other memberships include St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Iowa State and National Education Association, Norwalk Professional Education Association, Prevention Concepts Board of Directors, Iowa High School Girls Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, Norwalk Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the year, and he volunteered for Meals on Wheels. Jim is survived by his wife, Mary of Norwalk; daughters, Kelly (Mark) Low of Cumming, Kris (Larry) Britt of Norwalk; 7 grandchildren, Joshua Fross (Danielle), Jeremy Fross, Maegen Marmon (Kevin), Jordyn Hill (Ky), Erik Lindemoen (Paige), Brandon Britt (Christina), and Jessica Horner (Donald); 7 great-grandchildren, Noah, Lily, Kennedy, Ella, Weston, Reagan, and Milayna; a brother, John Cain II (Pat) of Okoboji, IA; and a host of nieces and nephews.
