Jimmy was born June 14, 1953 at the US Naval Hospital in Great Lakes, Illinois to US Army Lt. Colonel James L. Mayes Sr and US Army Captain Helen M. Groshong.

Jimmy was raised in Springer, Oklahoma where he attended school and graduated in 1971. After school Jimmy enlisted and served 6 years with the Army National Guard following in the long line of military services of his family. The majority of late teens through his 30’s were spent working on various oil rigs throughout the states and even a stint at an offshore rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Jim continued to work in various hard-manual labor jobs including manufacturing, HVAC, and welding. Even when he was forced to retire early due to health he continued to tinker and find projects around the house – he always had to be busy.
