Obituary for James Leslie “Jim” Hayes Jr. Print James L. Hayes of Warren, formerly of Chatham Township and New Providence, died on January 24, 2019 at the age of 85. Visitation is at the Valley Memorial Funeral Home, 1012 Valley Road, Gillette, NJ on Sunday, January 27 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Valley Memorial on Monday, January 28, 2019 at 10 a.m. Internment will be at Saint Vincent de Paul Cemetery on Chestnut Street in Stirling, NJ immediately following the memorial service. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Mr. Hayes was raised in Maine during his adolescent years.
He attended the Millhouse and Wilbur Cross High Schools in New Haven, CT. He graduated from New Haven State Teachers College in New Haven and began teaching in Oxford, CT for a brief time and then entered the field of textbook publishing. He later attended the General Electric Management School.
He married his wife, Anne Mary (Huber) in 1958 and settled In Branford, CT. He started as a sales representative for Silver Burdett Company in Morristown, NJ, and rose to the position of Vice President of Corporate Marketing of General Learning Corporation, a joint venture of Time, Inc. and General Electric. Subsequently, he held several positions at CBS, Inc. including President of the CBS International Publishing Division.
Later in his career he joined the CBS International Publishing Division as Vice President of Planning and eventually headed up CBS’s Spanish language record subsidiary, Disco CBS Internacional in Miami, FL and lived in Coral Springs, FL. After CBS, he became President of Grolier’s Educational Corporation in Danbury, CT. He and his wife of 48 years settled in Chatham, NJ after retiring.
His wife, Anne Mary (Huber), predeceased him in 2006. He leaves six children including his daughter, Kathleen and her husband, Robert Swanton of Stirling, NJ; his daughter Patricia and her husband, John Parlapiano of Stirling, NJ; his daughter, Leslie and her husband William Tombaga of Pinellas Park, FL; his son James and his wife Suzanne of Gilroy, CA; his daughter, Maureen Hayes; and his daughter Carrie and her husband, George Schroeder of Middle, NJ, twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
