Obituary for James McCray Proper CORTLAND – James McCray Proper, 82, passed away at 12:25 p.m. on Saturday July 28, 2018 at the St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown. He was born in Corry, Pennsylvania on April 26, 1936 the son of Clarence and Winifred (McCray) Proper. He was a 1954 graduate of Corry High School where he was a member of the Championship undefeated football team.
He furthered his studies at Gannon University where he graduated in 1959 with a Bachelors in Science Degree in Business. He retired from Trumbull Memorial Hospital in 1996 after working there many years. Jim was a gifted craftsman and carpenter.
He was a self-employed custom home builder and the owner of Proper Pools which constructed and serviced many in-ground swimming pools. Jim and Carol spent winters in Holiday, Florida where he loved and enjoyed being at the beaches. He cherished the time spent at his grandchildren’s activities especially their football, baseball and soccer games.
Jim is survived by his wife Carol (Hassett) Proper whom he married on June 3, 1959; four children, Michael (Lori Scarnecchia) Proper of Niles, Mark Proper of Holiday, Florida, Michele Proper of Cortland, Melissa Proper Busefink of Cortland; 11 grandchildren, Heather, Sarah, Amanda, Rachel, Mackenzie, Ryan, Kyle, Joseph, Noah, Jake, Alexis; three great grandchildren, Lillian, Maxwell, Julian; sister, Marilyn (Roger) Thompson of Wattsburg, Pennsylvania; niece, Pam and nephew, James. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Matthew Jon Proper who died on March 6, 2009. Calling Hours will be Wednesday, August 1, 2018 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the North-Mar Church of the Christian and Missionary Alliance 3855 E. Market Street, Warren, Ohio 44484.
The Funeral will follow at 5 p.m. at church with Pastor Myron Daum officiating. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to the Bella Women’s Center 1192 North Road N.E., Warren, Ohio 44483.
