Obituary for James Poe Hardy James Poe Hardy July 15, 1939 – October 22, 2018 Dr. James P. Hardy, 79, of Franktown, CO, died October 22, 2018, at home with his wife, Sally Lee Baker Hardy, by his side. Jim was born July 15, 1939 in Santa Maria, CA to Edwin Hardy and Elizabeth (Poe) Hardy. Jim said of himself that he was born to be a scientist, and he spent his childhood reading about radioactivity, collecting snakes and amphibians, and building batteries and magnets.

He graduated from Occidental College in 1961 with a degree in chemistry, the field in which he also earned his doctorate from UCLA in 1966. He and Sally Lee Baker married on June 30, 1961, in Madera, CA; including their three-year courtship, their life together endured for sixty years. They had lived in their beautiful Franktown home since 1986.

Jim’s career as a chemist included work at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (where he investigated, among other things, the possibility of life on Mars) and at Lockheed Martin. Jim is survived by his wife, Sally Lee Baker Hardy; many caring friends and neighbors; and his goddaughters Barbara Chlebica and Jennifer Tuttle. Jim was beloved for his kind heart and his great sense of humor; in his youth, his expertise in chemistry lent creativity to many a good-natured prank.
