Obituary for James Washington Grady James Washington Grady, 90 of Hurricane passed away November 29, 2018 at Pathways Memory Care, Houston, TX. Born March 23, 1928 in Cedar Grove, Jim was the only son of the late William and Virginia Grady. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Alberta Brown Grady and sisters, Vivian McGregor, Phyllis Bowe, and Lois Large.

Jim proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II on the Billy Mitchell, troop transport ship. He retired from Union Carbide after many years of faithful service, traveling all over the world for the company. He was a member of the Putnam Lodge #139 A.F.&A.M., Beni Kedem Shrine, Scottish Rite, York Rite, and Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 116.

Jim enjoyed the fellowship with his fellow Masons and was involved in many activities and charitable work for many years through his lifetime as a Mason. He was a member of Forrest Burdette United Methodist Church and attended First Baptist Church of Hurricane. Jim enjoyed bowling was an avid hunter and was a talented baseball player in his youth.

He will be remembered by many as a gentleman, but also a gentle man. He is survived by his wife, Betty Elswick Grady; daughter, Theresa Katherine Whyte (Kenneth Keiffer); grandsons, Nathaniel Grady Whyte and his wife Amanda of Marietta, OH and Quincy James Whyte of Parkersburg; 4 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Jim also loved his bonus family, and is survived by his step-daughter, Catherine Elswick-Corey and her husband Michael Corey of The Woodlands, TX; step-granddaughters, Elizabeth Phillips-Corey of Houston, TX and Mary Catherine Corey-Finney (Preston) of Dallas, TX and a step-great-granddaughter.

Funeral service with Military Honors will be held at 12:00pm Thursday December 6, 2018 at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane with Pastor Jeffrey A. Davenport officiating and Rev. Dr. Ellis Conley assisting. Burial with Masonic graveside Rites will follow in Montgomery Memorial Park, London.

Visitation will be from 10:00 am-12:00pm Thursday at the funeral home. An Order of the Eastern service will be held at 11:30am during the visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to Beni Kedem Shrine Transportation Fund, Alzheimer’s Assoc.
