Dr. Jean Hayter Muncy, age 98, passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2019. She was born March 19, 1921 in Abington, Virginia to the late Milton and Florence Cunningham Hayter. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Dr. Estle P. Muncy; step-son, Robert Muncy; brothers, Ralph and Lyle Hayter; and sister, Corinne Hayter Thompson.

She survived by step-children, Ann (Bill) Fischer, Dorothy (Stephen) Kuffler, Estle P. Muncy II, James (Judith) Muncy and step-daughter-in-law, Joyce Muncy; ten step-grandchildren and several step-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Dr. Lon J. (Jacqulyn) Muncy; sister-in-law, June McCoy; and a host of beloved friends and former students. Jean was a member of George Street United Methodist Church. She held a baccalaureate degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA, master’s and doctoral degrees from Columbia University, New York, NY, and did post-doctoral study at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI.

A Registered Nurse, she held nursing positions in Virginia, Tennessee and Texas. She was a Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University for twelve years; part-time Visiting Professor at Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI for three years; and Professor at University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY for twenty-one years, the position from which she retired. Until her retirement Jean had a busy professional career.

A member of American Nurses Association, National League for Nursing, American Academy of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau and National Academies of Practice, she was active in professional organizations throughout her career and held various offices in them. She was as accreditation visitor and Board of Review member for National League for Nursing. She published over one hundred book chapters, articles and research briefs in various professional journals, including reports of her original research.

While at University of Kentucky, she started a master’s program in gerontological nursing. She did consultation, gave talks and conducted workshops throughout the United States for many years. In 1973 she was selected as a Charter Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, one of only thirty-six nurses in the United States so honored.

Among her many awards were National League for Nursing Fellowship, Virginia Commonwealth University Outstanding Alumnus Award, Kentucky Nurse of the Year, Kentucky Nurse Educator of the Year and Special Commendations from University of Cincinnati and Spalding University. After their retirement, Jean and her beloved husband traveled extensively in approximately fifty foreign countries and in all fifty states and participated in numerous community and volunteer activities until health issues made that impossible A sincere thank you to Darby House Retirement Living staff for there devoted care of Jean during the past 3 years. Family and friends will gather at Jefferson Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Jefferson City, TN for inurnment services at 3:00 PM Friday, March 22, 2019, with Rev. William Rimmer, George Street Untied Methodist Church, officiating. Fielden Funeral Home, New Market, TN is in charge of Arrangements.
