Jewel Beverly Hedges, 76, of Chatsworth, passed away on February 17, 2019, at Murray Medical Center (AdventHealth) under hospice care given by Homespun Hospice in Murray County, Georgia. Jewel was surrounded by her family after a hard fought battle with multiple health issues. Jewel will be cremated and no services will be held per her request.

Arrangements are by Jones Funeral Home. Jewel was born in Ellijay, Georgia to Jimmy Johnson and Frances Roberson on November 16, 1942. She graduated from Jackson High School in Miami, Florida where she was a competitive shooter on the rifle team.

Jewel graduated from Dalton State College. Jewel was a Master Gardner. She enjoyed painting, sketching and her pets.

She married James Hedges on December 16, 1964, in Kansas City, Kansas. While living in Las Vegas, Nevada Jewel was working as a telephone operator when she spoke with Jimmy Durante. Jewel worked at Murray County Hospital for 26 years as an Administrative Assistant to the Hospital Administrator.

Jewel LOVED her Murray County Hospital family. One of the administrators she enjoyed working with was Jim Hazel. Jewel retired from the Murray County Extension 4H Office (University of Georgia) after working ten years with Louis Dykes, the County Extension Agent.

Jewel is preceded in death by her Grandparents Walter and Phobee Blackwell Pierce who raised her during her toddler and her preschool years. Frances Roberson (2011) mother, Jimmy Johnson (2002) father and Elizabeth “Ashley” Hedges (2015) Jewel’s special granddaughter. Her special pets waiting for her at Rainbow Bridge are Conway (Lhasa Apso), Murphy (Lhasa Apso), Katie (Dalmatian), Hootch (Mixed Terrier), Lillie (Cat) and Sissy (Rottweiler).

Jewel also had Goosey. Goosey was a Canadian Goose that Jewel rescued by stopping traffic in front of Hardee’s in Chatsworth to pick up the duckling out of the road. Jewel is survived by her husband James (Jim) Hedges, Curtis Hedges of Signal Mountain, TN, Dr. Beverly Hedges, Becky Hedges, Connie Hedges, Jimmy Lee Hedges (Mesa, Arizona) and Richard Hedges (Topeka, KS).

Granddaughters Cassie Hedges (Mesa, Arizona) and Rene Hicks and her grandson Curtis Hedges, Jr. both of (Cleveland, TN). Special cousins David Pierce and Betty Hamrick. Memorials may be given to Murray County Animal Shelter in Chatsworth, Georgia.

The family of Jewel wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Murray Medical Center now known as AdventHealth, their physicians Dr. Counsell, Dr. Wilson and Dr. Maddox. The AdventHealth Nursing Staff and Vanessa. The family would also like to thank First Baptist Church of Chatsworth (for building the ramp), Homespun Hospice.
