Funeral services for James Edward Burden, 86, of Wills Point, are scheduled for 10:00 am, Friday, July 6, 2018, at New Release Fellowship Baptist Church. Burial will be held at White Rose Cemetery in Wills Point. Services are under direction of Hiett’s LyBrand Funeral Home in Wills Point.

Jim passed away on July 2, 2018. James “Jim” Edward Burden was born March 4, 1932, in The Highland Community to the late James Morris Burden and Vernice Reeves Burden. Graduated from Edgewood Independent School District in 1950.

Attended North Texas University in Denton, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1954. Jim met Mary Carolyn Flanagan and they married August 8, 1953 in Wills Point. He served in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1958 then worked in the insurance business for four years prior to teaching at Wills Point High School.

He obtained his master’s degree in education at East Texas University at Commerce. Jim was counselor for Wills Point High School for most of his career. He retired in 1990 after twenty-seven years of service.

Jim was a man of faith serving his church as a deacon and other various roles. He was a member of New Release Fellowship Baptist Church in Wills Point. He is preceded in death by his parents, as well as, his wife, Mary Carolyn Flanagan Burden.

Jim is survived by his son, James David Burden and wife Debbie, of Tyler; daughter, Amy Deann Henson and husband Philip of Advance, NC; grandchildren, Drew and Emily Henson and James Mathew Burden; brothers, Raymond Scott and wife Gloria of Myrtle Springs and Randy Scott of Wills Point; sisters, Betty Cartwright and husband David of Wills Point, Wynona James and husband Charles of Wills Point, and Billie Cade and husband Mike of Wills Point. Family visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 pm Thursday evening. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Wills Point ISD Educational Foundation, C/O Wills Point ISD Administration, 338 W. North Commerce, Wills Point, TX 75169.
