Jim J. Skarda, age 81 of rural DeSoto passed away at his home peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday morning, July 13th, 2018. He was born on December 15, 1936 in Vernon County (Rockton) to James and Alma (Hatfield) Skarda. He graduated from Ontario High School in 1955.

On June 2, 1962 he married Phyllis Maxwell. He worked at Johns-Manville in Waukegan, IL for 38 years. In the spring of 1992 he and Phyllis retired to the Maxwell family farm.

Jim is survived by his wife of 56 years, Phyllis, two children; Mark (Debbie) Skarda, Melanie (Ed) Hartnek, four grandchildren; Joe (Cortney) Skarda, Sara Skarda (Nick Poepping), Dylan Hartnek and Dayna Hartnek. He is also survived by one sister, Lora Dunwald; brother, Lloyd (Darlene) Skarda; sister-in-law, Sandra Skarda and brother-in-laws, Frank (Linda) Maxwell, Don (Jean) Maxwell, Howard Maxwell, Harold (Jo) Maxwell and Gene Maxwell, several nieces and nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by one brother, Joie Skarda; brothers-in-law, Roy Dunwald, Paul Maxwell, sisters-in-laws, Dorothy Maxwell, Karen Maxwell, Dianne Maxwell, as well as his parents.

Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday July 16th, 2018 at the Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua,WI. An Eagle tribute will be held at 11:45 a.m with a celebration of life service at 12:00 pm. Pastor Pam Harkema will be officiating.

Private burial will be at the Bear Creek Cemetery at rural La Farge, WI. The family suggests memorials. Special thanks to Gundersen Hospice, Angie Strasser, RN and daughter-in law, Debbie Skarda for her hospital and in home care.
