A mighty oak fell in God’s forest today. This oak had many bows and was deeply rooted. GOD was there to catch this mighty oak and upon this embrace, he simply said “job well done”.

This was no ordinary oak. It is with great sadness that the family of Jimmy Edward Hinnant, announces his passing on Wednesday, June 13th after a 20 year battle with cancer. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years, Lynda H. Hinnant, and his children: son, Chris (Amy); daughters: Amy Riggsbee and Betina Medlin.

Pa Jim was also remembered affectionately by his 6 grandchildren: Hannah, Clark, Taylor, Sam, Kate, and Charlotte, and 2 great-grandchildren, Layla and Lacy. Following his service in the Army, he truly enjoyed a career with Southern Bell for 31 years. Followed by his first career, he formed a business with his best friend because retirement was too boring.

They worked side by side daily for 11 years. They formed a 2-Man Board of Directors for a 2-Man company and made the executive decision “not to work on Fridays, then not on Mondays either, and ultimately, not at all so they could play golf when they wanted. Jim found the game of golf later in life.

We are all blessed to have had the opportunity to “play the front nine” with him. He treasured breakfasts at the “University of Dallas”, his Monday and Friday golf outings with the gang, his treasured trips to Beaufort, boating, “porching,” and fellowship with those he loved. What a role model and inspiration he was for all of those fortunate to call him Husband, Dad, Pa Jim, Best Friend, Brother, Friend, Neighbor, Co-worker, and Brother in Christ.

Jim was a man of integrity and integrity is always doing the right thing when no one is looking. He served his Family, his Country and his Church with the spirit of giving. Now that Jim has made the turn and starting the everlasting back nine, he is on the 10th tee with Jesus as his caddy, enthusiastically carrying his bag, and there are birdies and eagles every step of the way!

A mighty oak fell in God’s forest, but this was no ordinary oak. Family visitation will be on Friday, June 15th at Swift Creek Baptist Church, 9300 Penny Road, Raleigh, NC starting at 6pm. The funeral will be at the same church on Saturday, June 16th at 11am.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the Shepherd’s Table Soup Kitchen in Downtown Raleigh to feed the hungry (shepherds-table.org), 121 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, NC 27603.
