Scott Johnson all of Benson; nieces and nephews, Ethan Godwin and Emilee Godwin both of Benson and Meghan Johnson Thomas and husband, John of New Bern; and special companion, Greisel. In his teen years, Joey was an amateur motor cross racer, which led to his love of off-road ATV trail rides. He enjoyed countless weekends with friends and family at Busco Beach in Goldsboro.

Later in life, he became a Harley Davidson enthusiast encouraged by his brother in law Scotty, he enjoyed many bike rides to support various charitable causes. He escorted a bus caravan of World War II veterans from Virginia back to Benson. He and his beloved dog, Greisel spent many Sunday afternoons on the road with the wind blowing thru their hair.

Joey enjoyed spending time with his nieces, nephew and their friends. He became “UNCLE JOEY” to all of them. He constantly pulled pranks or jokes to his delight.

His memory will live on in their hearts. Joey was a man of compassion for others. He always gave a helping hand, where he saw the need.

He was famous for his spaghetti and lasagna suppers to friends who were going thru a sickness or “just because”. Joey checked on friends and family who lost a loved one or those recovering from surgery. He continued to visit to bring comfort and a chuckle.

Joey was known for his infectious smile and laughter. Joey was an inspiration to his mother, Brenda and his sisters, Lynn and Rita. They were known as the four musketeers.

His love of food bonded Joey and Emilee, during many trips to pizza parlors, McDonalds and other restaurants. Since Joey gave both his sisters away at their weddings, Meghan wanted to continue the tradition in a special way. Her Uncle Joey escorted her from the bride’s room to the aisle where she met her father and her husband-to-be John.

Joey spent much of the last year with his sister, Lynn, at TNT Gym. It has been a long road; however, with his encouragement and constant love he helped her bounce back. They had planned to participate in the Benson town 5k race in October.

When not spreading sunshine, Joey’s passion, was to tinker on all kinds of gadgets. He was famous for his, “I have to find out how this works,” mentality but never putting it back together leaving that to his brother in law, Timmy. His nephew, Ethan, called him a great Thinker and Philosopher.
