Joel Claude Pinnix April 09, 1930 – February 03, 2019 Share this obituary View/Sign Guest Book Joel Claude Pinnix (88), passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 3, 2019. He was born on April 9, 1930 to Evelyn Hudspeth Pinnix and Claude Byron Pinnix in Brooks Crossroads (now Hamptonville), Yadkin County, the eighth of nine children. Joe graduated from West Yadkin School in 1948 where he was a star basketball player.
He matriculated at Appalachian State Teacher’s College (now Appalachian State University) where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1952 and a Master of Arts in Education in 1958. He served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955, earning the rank of corporal. Prior to serving in the Army, he taught sixth grade at West Yadkin School in Yadkin County and taught sixth grade in Elkin, NC before going to work for Norfolk Southern Railroad (1959 to 1963).
He worked for the Internal Revenue Service and then the Department of Transportation of the United States Government in Washington, DC beginning in 1963 and retiring in 1982. Always the fashionable dresser, after retiring from the federal government he delighted in working in the men’s department at Thalhimer’s Department Store in Winston-Salem. He was the loving and devoted husband of Joan Marie Olsen Pinnix for 57 years before she predeceased him in 2018.
He is survived by two sons, Joel Stern Pinnix (Patricia Hurley) and John Olsen Pinnix (Carter); four grandchildren, Joel Harrison Pinnix, Charles Ernest Pinnix, Caroline Mae Pinnix and John Carter (Jack) Pinnix; and his sister, Ruby Lee Pinnix Shore. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by four brothers and three sisters. A graveside service will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, February 9, 2019, at Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery in Hamptonville, with Pastor Tim Tucker officiating.
Immediately following the service, the family will receive friends and lunch will be served in the church fellowship hall. The family wishes to express their many thanks to the staff of Vienna Village Assisted Living in Pfafftown for the kindness and professional care given to Mr. Pinnix during his residency there over the last 3 years. The family requests no flowers.
