OBITUARY Johanna Fleming November 24, 1938 – July 18, 2018 Johanna Fleming of New City, NY has entered faithfully into eternal rest on July 18, 2018. Johanna was born November 24, 1938 to John and Angela (May) Solga in New York City. She grew up in Washington Heights where she attended grammar school at the Incarnation School and then high school at the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary in Park Terrace, New York City.
Johanna continued her formal education graduating from St. Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1959 and then earning a bachelor’s degree from St. Thomas Aquinas College in 1975. Johanna began her nursing career in the Neurosurgical Operating Room at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. After moving to the suburbs, she was a school nurse at Clarkstown South High School for 12 years where she also coached the Varsity Ski Team and JV Field Hockey.
Commuting to New York City, Johanna was also the School Nurse and Health Educator at the Marymount School of NY for 15 years. Johanna loved the outdoors and many sports including skiing, hiking, tennis, roller-blading, bowling and track. She completed three Sprint Triathlons at West Point and placed in her age group every time.
She also enjoyed knitting, sewing and many crafts which she lovingly gave to family, friends and the Birthright organization. As in her chosen profession, Johanna was always a dedicated caregiver to her family. She was predeceased by William, her husband of over 32 years, her sister Dorothy Sikkar and her parents John and Angela Solga.
She is survived by her children Connie (Daniel McNeely), Colette (Adrian Mackay), William (Patricia Cahill) and brother John Solga (Joann Mondo). In addition, she was blessed with four grandsons (Danny, Brian, Harry and Oscar) who adored their grandmother and loved joining her on her many outdoor adventures, as did many other family and friends who were drawn to her energy and her positive spirit while genuinely enjoying her easygoing good company. In 1995 Johanna joined the Ramapo Mountain Ski Club after seeing a newspaper ad about hiking and skiing.
While she improved her skiing a lot, she also met so many wonderful people and made so many friends. They truly were like extended family and she was eternally grateful for their friendship and all the good times they had on trips and at the lodge. Johanna was always open to learning, exploring, growing and enriching her life and the lives around her.
She was universally admired and loved, and she will be sorely missed by all who knew her. The family will receive friends on Friday, July 20 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home, Congers, New York. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 21 at 11:30 AM at St. Augustine’s Church, New City followed by internment at St. Anthony’s cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center or the United Hospice of Rockland.
