John A. Steward, Jr, 79, of The Villages passed away Sunday, May 26, 2019. Mr. Steward was born May 6, 1940 in Baltimore, MD to John Arthur, Sr and Ann Gist (Sykes) Steward. He was a Vietnam Veteran and retired as a Major and the head of Base Security in the U.S. Marine Corps.

John was a graduate in the 100th class of the FBI Academy, the NIS Academy and CID. John moved here in 2006 from Dunnellon. He is a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Leesburg, VFW in Leesburg, Marine Corp League in Leesburg and the Gideons International in Leesburg.

He was very active in church and loved being with his family, traveling, camping and golfing. Survivors include his loving wife, Joan; children, Carol Ann (Dale) Holder of Newport, NC, Randolph Eugene (Jeanna) Brightwell of Nashville, TN, Margaret Marie (Robert) Sprott of Hahira, GA, Deborah Ann (Mike) Smith of Lawrenceburg, TN, John Arthur (Amy) Steward, III of Indian Trail, NC, Robert James Steward of Bushnell, FL; stepchildren, Carla (Picton) Warlow and Carl H. Owens, Jr; 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his first wife of 36 years, Mary Charlotte Steward, brother, James Robert Steward and sister, Maryann Marino.

Services with military honors will be held in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International, www. gideons.org.
