John was raised in Maysville, Oklahoma, working side by side with his father to help care for and support his family, working with cattle, horses and farm animals. After returning, he worked in the oil fields briefly before moving his family to Oklahoma City to enroll in barber college and welcoming another son, Danny Ray to the growing family. After completing barber college, another daughter, Vickie Jane, was added to the family.

Several barbering jobs followed with time living in Pauls Valley, Lexington, and then Paoli, Oklahoma when he decided to start his own business in Pauls Valley naming his shop the “Tip Top Barbershop”. He relocated the shop 3 times in Pauls Valley until he found the location he wanted as a permanent home for his business. He ran his business until retiring after 50 years on October 10, 2007.
