Obituary for John J. “Jack” O’Connell John J. “Jack” O’Connell, 89, of Irwin, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019, in Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg. He was born Aug.

2, 1929, in Irwin, a son of the late Francis L. and Nell (Hensler) O’Connell. Prior to his retirement, he was a police officer for Churchill Borough and a former police officer for Irwin Borough. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Irwin.

Jack was a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 39; he was an avid racquet ball player and a member of the Westmoreland Racquet Club, Greensburg. He was a veteran of the Air Force, having served during the Korean War. Jack was a licensed barber for many years and cut hair out of his basement barber shop for many of his friends and family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Esther (Dranzik) O’Connell; a sister, Eleanor Swenson; and a brother, Francis O’Connell. Surviving are four children, Jackie Natale and her husband, Richard, of North Huntingdon, Dan O’Connell and his wife, Paula, of Uniontown, John O’Connell Jr. and his fiancee, Janet Stegall, of Birmingham, Ala. , and Kevin O’Connell and his wife, Michelle, of North Huntingdon; five grandchildren, Nicole and Tony Natale, and Dante, Courtney and Brittany O’Connell; two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Cooper Natale; a sister, Eileen McHugh, of Hempfield Township; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at OTT FUNERAL HOME INC. , 805 Pennsylvania Ave. , Irwin.

Parting prayers will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home followed by an 11:30 a.m. Mass of Christian burial celebrated in Immaculate Conception Church. Interment will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, North Huntingdon. The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the National Kidney Foundation, 2403 Sidney St., Suite 230, Pittsburgh PA 15203.
