John (Jack) M. Powlus, born October 31, 1923 in Almedia, PA, died May 26, 2019 at age 95 on his farm in Catawissa, PA. Jack was the son of the late Fred and Myrtle (Reese) Powlus and attended the Scott schools. During World War II he proudly served with the Army’s 3rd Division.

Entering the war in North Africa, he moved with the division across Northern Africa, into Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. Following the war, he married and resided in Bloomsburg, PA, attending Wesley United Methodist Church, working for US Radium Corporation and volunteering with the Wyona Fire Company. He was an avid hunter and also started helping his in-laws on their family farm.

After their passing, he took over running the farm while continuing to work for the Radium Corp. He loved to spend time with his family and to sit on his porch, enjoying the beauty of the farm and sharing life stories. He will be deeply missed by his family.

He was preceded in death by Carrie Lewis Powlus, his wife of 65 years, his parents Fred and Myrtle Powlus, sister Althea Hock, and brothers Vernon and Harold (Pete) Powlus. Survived by his two children, daughter Jacqueline and husband Dr. William Flook, of Berwick, PA, son Robin Powlus and his wife Barbara of Saylorsburg, PA; sisters Jane Smethers of Bethlehem, PA, Lorraine Owen of Ft. Myers, FL, and brother James Powlus of Almedia, PA.

As well as five grandchildren; Jessamy Killingsworth and her husband Dan of Emmaus, PA, Dr. Nathaniel Flook and his wife Sherry of Orangeville, Dr. Seth Flook and his wife Eileen of Peachtree Corners, GA, Joshua Flook and his wife Jaime of Buckhorn, PA, and Chelsea Renna and her husband JR of Pennsburg, PA, and nine great-grandchildren. Services will be Friday May 31, 2019 at 11:00 am at Roaring Creek Valley United Methodist Church, 6 Orchard Drive, Catawissa with his pastor, Pastor Adam Miller officiating. Burial will follow at St. John’s (Vought’s) Lutheran Church, RD 5 Danville.

Family will receive friends Thursday May 30, 2019 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Allen R. Horne Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 193 McIntyre Road, Catawissa. In lieu of flowers contributions in Jack’s memory may be sent to Roaring Creek Valley United Methodist Church, 6 Orchard Drive, Catawissa, PA, 17820.
