Beloved son of the late Nicholas and Irene (nee Hinopoulou) Lallas; loving brother of Eva Lallas and the late Evanthia Lallas. John was born on December 20, 1932 in Baltimore and was raised in the area now known as Greektown.

He graduated from Patterson Park High School in 1951 and the University of Baltimore in 1955, at which time he began his career at Western Electric on Broening Highway as an industrial engineer. He pursued post graduate studies at McCoy College and Princeton University. Upon the company’s closing in 1986 he took charge of the auction of materials and tossed the keys over the fence.

While assisting others in their political endeavors John was known as “The Mayor of the Hill”. He was very proud of his Greek heritage, especially that of the Greeks of Asia Minor and visited family members in Greece many times. Along with Sunday School, he completed the afternoon Greek School program and became a member of AHEPA.

John served on the Parish Council of St. Nicholas and represented the church at the Clergy Laity Council in 1962. He valued being a 60 year member of Masonry having joined the Center Lodge of Maryland in October 1958 and lived up to its standards. John was a builder at heart.

He made additions and repairs to each home he lived in including a major addition to his residence in Kingsville. In addition to his full time job, his pride and joy was designing and building the country home in Westminster, incorporating the many Belgian blocks which were being discarded in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. John enjoyed sharing the history of Baltimore and taking visitors on tours of the city.

John is best remembered as a dear, caring friend: putting family first and extending the helping hand of friendship to all – with no regard to time involved or physical distance. Within days of being hospitalized he was heard offering assistance to friends – those newly acquired or those of his childhood, as he had kept contact with many over the years. He never neglected his semi-annual visits to departed friends and maintained lasting friendships with those he met on trips.

Generosity and thankfulness were traits he learned from his parents, for he wanted to share his good fortune with others. John lived his life as a spiritual Orthodox Christian. Family will receive visitors at the Connelly Funeral Home of Dundalk on Tuesday from 4-8 PM, with a Trisagion service at 7:30PM.
