John P. Teter, 72, of Zion Grove, passed away on Friday, March 30, 2018, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in Shenandoah, on May 3, 1945, he was the son of the late Harold E. and Helen (Long) Teter. John was a graduate of the West Hazleton High School and received a Bachelors degree from the former Bloomsburg Teachers College and a a Masters degree in secondary Guidance from the Kutztown University.
He worked for the North Schuylkill School District for over 31 years, primarily as a Math teacher. John also was dean of students, in charge of discipline in his later years. He also served as guidance counselor for the former North Vo-Tech school in Frackville, for half a day for five years.
John was an active life-long member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Zion Grove. During his lifetime, he sang in the choir, was superintendent of the Sunday School, was a member of the Church Council, served as joint parish treasurer for 19 years straight, and also served on the Building Committee, Call Committee and mutual Ministry Committee.
An active hunter, he has taken numerous speciies of game in Schuylkill County and the surrounding area, including a 6 point Piebald trophy buck. He once won 12 buck pools in a single year, taking a ten point buck locally, besting over 1000 entrants. Hunting gray squirrels with a used .
22 rifle bought at retirement, was a passion, taking over 425 including one black squirrel. John was president of the former Zion Grove Hunting Club for many years. An original member of the Buckfeather Rod and Gun Club, serving as treasurer for 12 years.
He was also Treasurer of the Ringtown Valley Sporting club for the past 12 years. A member of the Shenandoah Fish and Game Club, he also cooked for Tuesday night Bingo at the club for the last 5 years. John also taught the local hunter trapper education safety course for the PA Game Commission for over 15 years.
He also spent a lot of time trout fishing, catching 316 in one year, all using worms while catching no more than 5 per day, all of which were consumed by someone. Sports were a large part of his life playing slow pitch softball for Bott’s and the Ringtown co-ed league. He also coached Ringtown Little League for several decades.
John spent many hours on his commercial lawn mower every summer, mowing lawns for family and friends, hunting clubs, along the highway and on paths around property lines. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde, and Charles “Wilt” Teter; a step son, Nathan Fetterman, and mother of his children, Mary L. Morgan. Surviving are children, Bill Teter and his wife Marcy of Painted Post, NY; Randy Teter of Zion Grove; Maj.
Aaron Teter and his wife Erin of Camp Hill; Phoebe Shaw, Zion Grove; Fawn and her husband Toby Baldauf of Tyrone, PA. He is also survived by two brothers, Carl Teter of Zion Grove; and Earl Teter and his wife Pattie of Ringtown, and a sister, Marion, wife of Barry Davis of Zion Grove. Four grandchildren survive, Cyrus Shaw; Ava Baldauf; Everleigh and Isla Teter.
John is also survived by his companion, Michelle Hutton. Many nieces and nephews and cousins also survive. A Funeral Service will be held at the Mt.
Zion Lutheran Church at 11 am on Wednesday, April 4th, 2018. A viewing will be held at the Stauffer-Breznik Funeral Home, 412 West Main Street, Ringtown, from 6-9 pm on Tuesday evening and again from 10-11 am Wednesday morning, prior to the service at the church. John will be laid to rest in the Mt.
Zion Cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are asked to be made to the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, PO Box 61, Zion Grove, PA 17985, to be used for the Nathan Fetterman Memorial Scholarship Fund.
