John “Pete” Leonard Nickerson, 94, of Goldsboro, Maryland, passed away Sunday March 3, 2019. He was born November 10, 1924 in Barclay, Maryland, to the late Paul and Edith Nickerson. He was born and raised on a farm which was his life for many years.

Pete was a “jack of all trades” on the farm from milking cows, working in the fields, delivering calves, and doctoring the animals. In his spare time he enjoyed yard sales to find a good bargain, working with wood, building, and gardening especially growing his tomatoes. His favorite western was Gunsmoke and the music of his choice was definitely Blue Grass and Gospel.

In 1972 he began working for the Queen Anne’s County State Highway Department. He went many days and nights pushing snow and in the hot summer mowing grass until his retirement after 16 years of service. The friends he made along the way continued to stay in touch and visit.

In addition to his parents Pete is preceded in death by his wife, Olga Boyd Nickerson, 3 brothers and 2 sisters. He is survived by his son Russell J. Nickerson and his wife Cindy of Denton, daughter Lucille R. Wilson of Georgetown, DE, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, lifelong friend Edwin “Smokey” Joiner, and the many people who loved him. A funeral service will be held on Friday March 8, 2019 at Fleegle and Helfenbein Funeral Home in Greensboro MD at 1:00 pm.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, 2 hours prior to the funeral. Burial will follow the service at the Denton Cemetery. To share memories and offer online condolences please visit www.
