John S. “Jack” Sulton III, 69, of Gloucester, passed away on Wednesday evening, March 13, 2019 at the Addison Gilbert Hospital. He was the husband of Virginia (Ginny) L. (Burnham) Sulton. Born in Beverly on March 30, 1949, he was the son of the late John S. Sulton Jr. and Ada (O’Neill) Sulton.

Jack was a graduate of Gloucester High School with the Class of 1968. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Adams State College in Colorado and his Master’s degree at Cambridge College. A lifelong teacher in the Gloucester School system, he began his career in the Industrial Arts Department at O’Maley School and then taught for 30 years at the Gloucester High School before retiring.

Jack was beloved as a teacher and had received many cards and letters of appreciation from former students over the years. During the summer months, Jack enjoyed lobstering and spending time on the ocean. Jack was known for his rugged power and from the time he was young, competed in numerous dory races and was the first of an American team to defeat the Canadian team in Nova Scotia.

Jack also coached Little League Baseball for the Braves and was a lifelong member of the Gloucester Lodge of Elks. In addition to his wife Virginia, he is survived by his two sons, John S. Sulton IV and Steven J. Sulton; his beloved grandson Ryan Steven Sulton; cousins Rosa Olivia and Arthur Goodwin, Margaret York and several other cousins; and sister-in-law Marianne Sulton. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Capt.

Robert E. Sulton. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held later this summer. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to: Virginia L. Sulton, 7 Story Street, Rockport, MA 01966, to help pay Medical Bills.
