Obituary of John Kormanic John Kormanic Sr., 87, of Bellefonte passed away October 21, 2018 at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Clarence on November 29, 1930 to the late John and Susie (Scrab) Kormanec. He married Joan M. (Harpster) March 11, 1978 in Boalsburg; she survives in Bellefonte.
He was a graduate of Wahawi High School in Hawaii. He served in the US Army for 25 years. He served in Japan, Korea, Hawaii, Germany, and Vietnam.
His rank was Command Sergeant Major, retired in 1971. He was a Korean and Vietnam War veteran. He received the Bronze Star, 2 Commendation medals, and a letter from President Nixon for his service to his country.
He received the World War II Victory Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Medical Combat Badge, the United Nations Medal, the Korean Service Medal with 5 Battle Campaign Stars, the Japan Occupation Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Europe Occupation Medal. He was also employed by the State Correctional Institution at Rockview as the Healthcare Administrator for 18 years, retiring in 1990. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his 5 children, Helga Tate of Port Matilda and children Daisy, Chrystal, Roy, Helga and Richard Jr., John P. (Pam) of Huntingdon and children John P Jr. and Josh, Jason (Lisa) of Bellefonte and children Danielle and Jessica, Robert (Carinda) of Bellefonte and son Braedyn, Joyce Mills (Anthony) of Brockway, PA and children Wesley, Hunter, Riley and Parker, 4 great grandchildren and 2 step great grandchildren.
John is also survived by one sister, Mary Viehdorfer of Pine Glenn, and one brother, Michael Kormanec, of New York. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his 3 brothers, Steve, Andy and Edward, one sister Annie Streightiff, one daughter in law, Kelly Kormanic and one son in law, Richard Tate. He was a long time member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and St John’s Catholic Church of Bellefonte.
He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, camping and baseball. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 24, 2018, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Koch’s Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton Street, State College. Services will be conducted by Father George Jakopac at Koch’s Funeral Home on Thursday, October 25, 2018, at 11 a.m., and interment will be at Boalsburg Cemetery.
