Obituary of Charles Ameringer Charles D. Ameringer, of State College, PA passed away on November, 10, 2018. He was born on September 19, 1926 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of the late Carl and Pearl Ameringer. On June 24, 1949, he married Jean McNicol.

They were married for 67 years before she preceded him in death. He is survived by two sons, Carl F. of Nellysford, VA, and William C. of Palm Beach, FL; two granddaughters, and two great granddaughters. An educator specializing in Latin American history, he earned his BA degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and MA and PhD degrees from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, Medford, MA.

He began his professional career in 1951 as a research analytic specialist with the Armed Forces Security Agency in Arlington, VA. In 1959, he joined the history faculty of Bowling Green State University (Ohio). He came to Penn State as associate professor of history in 1964, served for a term as head of the history department (1985-1990), and retired as professor emeritus of Latin American history in 1994.

In 2011, he received the College of the Liberal Arts Emeritus Distinction Award. He is the author of seven books, the editor of another, and writer of numerous articles in scholarly journals, including The American Historical Review. He was the co-founder of the Middle Atlantic Council of Latin American Studies and served as its president (1980-81).

He held the rank of captain in the United States Air Force Reserve. Chuck, as his friends knew him, was an avid golfer and enjoyed reading and playing the trumpet. A Graveside service will be held at 1 PM on Monday, November 12, 2018 at Graysville Cemetery.
