The morning of Friday March 9th, 2019, Jon died suddenly in a snowmobiling accident while on a trip with his son, Stefan Koivun, in Ontonagon, Michigan. Jon grew up in Moline, Illinois and graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1991.

He was a systems analyst at ITW in Glenview, Illinois. Jon enjoyed a seemingly never-ending variety of activities. He played many sports including football, wrestling, track, and any sport his kids were involved in.

He loved being outside, whether that be hiking, camping, water activities, or snowmobiling. Jon had a passion for woodworking and sharing his knowledge to make the world a better place. He completed many carpentry projects including houses, additions, garages, and his dream of building a lake house for his family and children to enjoy for the rest of their lives.

Jon was a jack of all trades, but above all, he loved spending time with his children. Anyone who knew Jon knows that they could count on him to help with absolutely anything, anytime, anywhere. He is survived by his three children: Elizabeth (21), Julia (19), and Stefan (16) Koivun.

He also lives on through his significant other Julie Draffkorn, and daughter Jordan; his siblings Jennifer Alvarez, George (Meghan) Koivun, and Susan (Timothy) Lobb; his stepfather Tom Liljegren; nieces, nephews and many, many good friends. Jon was preceded in death by both of his parents: Joy Liljegren, and Charles Koivun, as well as his older sister, Kathryn Mary Jacobs. A visitation will be held for Jon on Saturday, March 16th at 1:00-3:00pm at Skaja Bachmann Funeral Home at 7715 Northwest Highway Crystal Lake, IL 60012.

There will be a service at the funeral home after the visitation, starting at 3:00pm. Jon had always talked about people drinking Jack and Coke in honor of him. The sudden passing has been devastating for everyone affected, but Jon wanted to be remembered with smiles and laughter – just as he lived his life.
