JOSE’s Obituary Jose Esteban Romero passed peacefully at home in Sebastian, Florida on May 3, 2019. Jose, more commonly known to those who knew and loved him as “Kiko”, “Joe”, or “Papa Joe”, was born in Havana, Cuba on September 2, 1939. He was an only child to Jose and Carmelina Romero.
After finishing high school, he and his parents moved to New York City. Jose joined the Army in Fort Dix, NJ but was honorably discharged due to his complications with asthma. He then began what would be a 30+ year career working for a popular 5 & 10 store in the New York City called MH Lamstons.
It’s no surprise that Joe rose through the ranks at Lamstons, becoming a highly respected store manager, and winning the coveted “Manager of the Year” award twice and runner-up half dozen times. Jose worked in multiple stores though out the NY/NJ area, and because of his expertise, was often asked to assist in opening new stores. He valued and respected his employees greatly, expecting the best from them and giving it in return.
Eventually Joe “retired”, only to become an entrepreneur and follow his passion to work with animals. He opened a pet shop in Union City, NJ, cleverly named “Pet-A-Dise”. He had an infinity for fish and birds, particularly parrots, so his shop specialized in both.
Over the next 14 years, Joe mentored many kids (including his own), giving them the opportunity to hold their first job and teaching them much, especially the importance of responsibility. In 2002, Joe finally fulfilled his dream to abandon the cold, traffic, and congestion of city life – all of which he never liked – and began the newest chapter of his life. He moved to the quaint town of Sebastian, Florida, and so began his simple life of gardening, fishing, and an endless variety of projects in his garage…all of which brought him much joy.
Those who knew Kiko/Joe, know that he was a kind humble gentleman. He who would do anything for anyone, never expecting anything in return. His heart was pure.
He never complained, despite his many challenges in life, and was always strong for others. Joe never spoke badly of anyone, nor would he tolerate anyone doing so in his presence. He was meticulous, creative, and disciplined… generous, simple, honest, wise, and dignified.
He was thoughtful, and always put others before himself. Kiko’s smile was warm and always sincere, and he shared it with anyone in his path. He loved Spanish music, the outdoors, plants, birds, and the sea.
Family meant everything to him, and his faith in God kept him strong. Joe made this world a better place. He touched the lives of so many and will forever live in their hearts.
Jose is survived by his friend and companion of over 20 years, Maria Elena Sucarino. Loving father of son Steven Romero and his wife Kathleen, and daughter Triana Romero. Proud grandfather, otherwise affectionately known as “Buelo”, of Brandon, Austin, Luna and Sebastian.
Great grandfather of Connor.
