Obituary for Jose G. Mejia Jose Guerrero Mejia went to dwell in the house of our lord May 16th, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, Adrian Mejia Jr. and Guadalupe Guerrero Mejia, siblings Isabel Mejia Navarro, Marcella Mejia Muller, Eugenio Mejia, daughter Patsy Sheilds, and son Adrian Jerome Mejia. Jose Mejia is survived by his siblings, Pedro Mejia, Maria Guadalupe Topp, and Noemi Mejia Wood, daughters Roberta Jacoby, Martha Dorfman, and Adriana Mejia, 10 grandchildren, 33 nieces and nephews.
Jose was known to all as a kind and generous man. A hard worker, and a passionate promoter of education. Born in Mercedes, TX, Jose was one of 6 children.
As the eldest, he helped raise his siblings until his enrolment into Us Army in 1947. He honorably served 20 years as an airborne paratrooper and airplane mechanic. At 24 years of age he started a family with Viola Suggs Mejia.
They had 3 children together also to include the eldest child of Viola’s, making it a dynamic family of 6. Together they traveled the world, enjoying stations such as Kabul, Afghanistan & New Guinea, Africa. Some of the fondest memories of that time were movie nights at their home in Africa.
Once a month a projector was set up on the side of their house and immediate military families gathered to enjoy family films together. At the age of 58 he had his final child with Marta Elizabeth Mejia. He was a dedicated and involved father.
Often times returning from night shifts at the US Post Office to care for an energetic infant. The fondest memories of his youngest were long motorcycle rides on Jose’s 2002 Honda Shadow. They would often head out into the quiet roads of the Rio Grande Valley enjoying the simple pleasure of time and company.
Jose G. Mejia lived out his final years in Donna, TX with his life partner of 18 years, Carmen Guajardo. He could often be found in his light blue recliner, reading books about history, politics and medicine, or watching 60 minutes. Jose was incandescent, and his passion for learning never ceased.
Jose Guerrero Mejia’s physical departure may have occurred May 16th of 2018, but his life and legacy will live on in those who loved and respected him. His kindness and generosity will live in our hearts and we will carry it forth to honor him. His memorial will be held from 11am to 3pm on the 19th of May at Rudy Garza’s Funeral Home located at 236 S Ohio Ave, Mercedes, TX 78570.
