Obituary for Jose “Pepe” Saldaña McAllen – Jose “Pepe” Saldaña was called home by the Lord on Sunday, November 18, 2018 at 3:31 am at McAllen Medical Center surrounded by his wife of 49 years and their 4 children. Pepe was a Union Organizer and Community Activist who served his community wholeheartedly. His involvement included being a lifelong member of the Hidalgo County Democratic Party as Chair for Precinct 48 for over 30 years.
Wherein 2014, he alongside his brother Lalo, “The Saldaña Brothers”, was recognized as Democrat of the Year. He was an educator for Texas Migrant Council for over 25 years and upon retirement he continued as a substitute teacher for Hidalgo ISD. He was preceded in death by his father: Baltazar Saldaña.
He is survived by his loving wife Herminia “Minnie” Saldaña; their 4 children: Marlen (Jorge) Sarmiento, Laura (Rey) Flores, Jose B. “JB” Saldaña (Jackie Suarez) and Hugo Saldaña; three grandchildren: Samantha Marie Saldaña, Angel S. Sarmiento and Andres S. Sarmiento; his mother: Justa C. Saldaña; siblings of which he was the oldest: Eva (Marcos) Garcia, Everardo “Lalo” (San Juanita) Saldaña, Maricela (Juan†) Treviño, Ruben (Abigail) Saldaña, Celia (Ramiro) Vargas, Gloria (Fernando) Lopez, Rosa Delia (Israel) Trevino, Elvia (Greg) Vargas, and Arnulfo Saldaña; and numerous nieces and nephews whom he cared for deeply. “Tio Pepe”, patriarch of the family, was always willing to share his wisdom and for that he will always be remembered! A gathering of family and friends will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at Rivera Funeral Home of McAllen from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM with a Holy Rosary being recited at 7:00 PM.
Celebration of Life Mass will be held on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in McAllen. Interment will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens in Mission. Services have been entrusted to the care of Rivera Funeral Home of McAllen.
