OBITUARY Joseph C. Tomaszewski April 1, 1924 – November 23, 2018 Joseph Chester Tomaszewski, 94 of Secaucus on Nov 23, 2018 went home to be with our Lord. He is survived by his loving wife, Gladys and his family, daughters Teresa (Thomas) McMahon, Maria Tomaszewski, Anna Tomaszewski, Denyse Walsh, Barbara Henry and son, John Henry. Also his grandchildren, Thomas (Lauren), Jenna (Ryan), Danielle, Melanie, John, Shannon, William and great grandchildren, Aaliyah, Kendall, Alexa and Micah.

He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor in 1976. Joe was born and raised in Jersey City of immigrant parents from Poland, Ignacy and Ewa. It was a large family with sister Jean and brothers Chester, Walter, Charles, Thomas and Alfred.

After graduating from Dickinson High School, Joe served in the U.S. Navy during World War II for 4 years. For his patriotic service, Joe was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with 2 Stars, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbons with 2 Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, American Theatre Medal, WWII Victory Ribbon. He survived the sinking of his ship, the USS Block Island CVE 21 by 3 torpedoes off the Canary Islands on May 29, 1944 by German submarine U-549.

His wartime activities and portrait will forever be enshrined at the National World War II Memorial in Washington DC. After the war, Joe began his long career as a machinist at Worthington Pump Corporation in Harrison. Joe volunteered for many years at Immaculate Conception Church in Secaucus, helping with bingo and carnivals.

He remained active in his retirement helping his wife, Gladys for a number of years at a dry cleaners in Secaucus, browsing the local garage sales, traveling, and enjoying his family, Joe loved his God and his country. He was a role model in every role he played. His love, words of wisdom and sense of humor will long be remembered.

Friends and family can visit Mack Memorial Home, 1245 Paterson Plank Road Secaucus this Sunday from 3-7 pm. Mass will be Monday 930 am at Immaculate Conception Church in Secaucus. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington.

In lieu of flowers, Donations in his memory can be made to the American Cancer Society 507 Westminster Ave. Elizabeth NJ 07208.
