Born October 5, 1946 in Charlottesville, Virginia, Joe lived a full, rich life embodying love, humor, humility, service, and kindness. Joe was a graduate of Scottsville High School, where he met the love of his life, his sweetheart of 51 years, Norma Snoddy Miller.

Joe attended Richard Bland College and the University of Virginia. He proudly served his beloved country as a reservist in the United States Marine Corps. In 1972, Joe embarked on a career in banking, to which he dedicated his entire career.

He ultimately found his calling as a commercial banker, first at NationsBank, from which he retired in 1998 as Senior Vice President. That same year, Joe joined and helped found Virginia National Bank, where he served the remainder of his career as Executive Vice President, Managing Director, and Senior Lending Officer. Joe’s professional pride rested in the number of wonderful businesses he supported, advised, and mentored in the central Virginia area.

Through the banking industry, Joe made lifelong friendships with both colleagues and customers. Joe served his community with the same commitment and drive that he dedicated to all aspects of his life. He volunteered his time, energy, and expertise as a board member of local non-profits including the Ronald McDonald House, the Senior Center of Charlottesville, the Blue Ridge Food Bank, and the United Way-Thomas Jefferson Area.

Above all Joe cherished his wife, family, and friends. He and Norma were partners in every sense; he adored her with his whole being. They loved dinners out at their favorite restaurant, Duner’s, cheering (and tailgating) at UVA football games, sharing a bottle of wine and laughing all night with friends, and traveling all over the world.

When their son, Joseph Dabney Miller III, was born, he embraced his new role wholeheartedly. Dad, coach, teacher, scout leader, confidant, and eventual Best Man, he welcomed every part he played in his son’s life. He got to experience a new wave of joy upon the births of his grandchildren Caroline and Jay, who loved playing games, watching movies, and telling jokes with their Papa.

Joe is survived by his wife, Norma, his son and daughter-in-law , Joe and Nola, his grandchildren , Caroline and Jay, his brother-in-la w, Robert Suling, his sister- in-law Cathy Sides (Doug) , and nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph Dabney Miller and Rebecca Bland Miller and by his sister, Judith Bland Suling. A service will be held on Friday, May 10 at 3:00pm First Presbyterian Church, with a reception to follow at the Greencroft Club.

The family invites memorial contributions to be made in Joe’s memory to the UVA Health Foundation, PO Box 400331, Charlottesville , VA 22904 . Contributions will be directed to support the teaching and research of Dr. Matthew Goodman, who provided Joe with the very best level of care possible. Joe’s family is eternally grateful to Dr. Goodman and to Becky Schwartz, RN, UVaCHH.
