Joseph H. Alfes, age 93, of Stratford, passed away peacefully in Southbury. He was born in Kansas City, MO and resided in CT most of his life. He was a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather who loved his family and country.

He served his country in the Navy proudly during WWII and then again during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Alfes felt great pride in his service to America. He served on the USS Drum, SS-228, The USS Grouper, and The USS Stingray, SS-186, whose flag still flies in New London, CT, for its 16 successful War Patrols during WWII.

Mr. Alfes was the recipient of numerous military awards, including his Good Conduct Medal, a WWII Campaign Medal, and a Presidential Award from The Philippine Government, to name a few. He was a part of many campaigns during his 10 year service. The most memorable were two, the largest Naval battle in WWII, The Battle Of Leyte Gulf, and also The Special Operations Landing in Luzon, Philippines, leading to the liberation of The Philippines.

He is survived by his son Richard Alfes and his wife Thea of Woodbury; his grandchildren Melissa, Stacey, Emily, Steven, and Richard; his great-grandchildren Cameron, Corey and Paisley. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Lucy of 47 years; his three brothers Floyd, Claud, Harold; a sister Cillia; later in life Joseph found happiness and companionship with Helen Sirico who passed away in November 2015. Friends are invited to attend his funeral service on Friday July 6 at 11:00 a.m. directly at Our Lady of Grace Church, 497 Second Hill Lane, Stratford.

Interment will follow with full military honors at St. Michael’s Cemetery Stratford. Friends may greet the family on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at the Cyril F. Mullins Funeral Home, 399 White Plains Rd. , Trumbull.
