Josephine B. Hajjar, 95, World Traveler, Hostess and Volunteer passed away peacefully on November 5, 2018. Jo was born at home on March 16, 1923 in Paterson, NJ to Syrian immigrants Nicholas G. and Eugenia Shashaty Balady. In 1943, Jo married George J. Hajjar, Esq.

and became an active member of Sacred Heart Church Women’s Organization and Parish Council. Josephine was involved in many volunteer and charity efforts including cooking meals for the homeless. She was for many years in the Cursillo Movement eventually becoming Rectora in 1976.

Throughout their married years, George and Josephine travelled the world. Her home was always open to family and distinguished guests as she loved to cook and serve everyone around her dining room table. Her husband George described her as the “hostess with the mostest” for her beauty and graciousness.

Josephine was predeceased by her parents; sisters Emily and Elizabeth; and brothers George and Joseph. Josephine was also predeceased by her husband George, daughter JoAnn Byrnes and son Joseph. Josephine is survived by her loving sisters Laurice Dikdan and Georgina Dahab and spouse Albert of Woodland Park.

She leaves behind her devoted daughter Eloise Hajjar, son-in-law Joseph Dowd as well as her beloved grandson Morgan G. Dowd of Lincoln Park. In additions to her many friends, “Aunt Jo” is remembered by three generations of nieces and nephews who mourn her passing. Arrangements: Visiting Thursday November 8, 2-4pm, 7-9pm with a Wake Service to be held at 7:30pm at Bizub Quinlan Funeral Home, 1313 Van Houten Avenue, Clifton, NJ 07013.

Funeral Mass Friday November 9, 10:00am Sacred Heart Armenian Catholic Church, 155 Long Hill Road, Little Fall, NJ 07424. Interment for Josephine and the cremains of her daughter Jo Ann following services at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery 52 Totowa Road, Totowa, NJ.
