She was born on May 11, 1947 in Sisseton, SD, where she grew up with her loving parents, Garfield and Edna Landmark, and her six siblings.

She played baseball and basketball in an era before schools had organized sports teams for girls. After graduating from Sissteon High School in 1965, Judy earned a B.S. degree in elementary education from Northern State College in Aberdeen, SD, in 1969. She accepted a job teaching second grade at Madison Elementary School in Manitowoc in 1969.

Judy married Bill Frieder on June 26, 1971. They had two sons, Steven and David, who she referred to as her “joys,” even though they caused her no small amount of anxiety over the years! Bill’s career took them to Omaha, NE, New Berlin, WI, and then back to Manitowoc in 1995, where Judy served on the board of the Domestic Violence Center (now InCourage).

Judy was a devoted and caring daughter, sister, niece, wife, mother, aunt, grandma, and friend. She loved every moment with her grandchildren Abby (11) and George (10). She cared so much about her family and friends, putting their well-being ahead of her own.

Like her mother, Judy loved babies and children, and had a special gift with young people. She enjoyed the music of Dolly Parton, Bette Midler, and Carole King. She was happy attending musical theater performances, especially Broadway shows and events at the Capitol Civic Centre.

Judy was an avid Marquette Golden Eagles basketball fan and followed professional tennis, especially the US Open in New York, which she attended 12 times. An avid reader, she also enjoyed playing the card games whist and Shanghai rummy. Judy is survived by Bill Frieder, her loving husband of almost 48 years; her beloved sons Steven of Milwaukee and David of Whitefish Bay; dear daughter-in-law Sara (Blankenheim) Frieder; cherished grandchildren Abby and George; and by her siblings: Richard (Shelva) Landmark of Sisseton, SD; Bonnie (John) Konrath of Waverly, MN; Darell (Diane) Landmark of Montevideo, MN; David (Janet) Landmark of Madras, OR: and Sheryl (Gary) Standly of Lakeville, MN.

She is also survived by brothers- and sisters-in-law Tom (Mary) Frieder of Manitowoc; and Mary Ellen (Bill) Maples of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. Judy loved her 19 nieces and nephews, never forgetting their birthdays. She celebrated their weddings and the births of her many grand nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Garfield and Edna Landmark, and by her sister, Linda Gordon. Special gratitude to Bill Maples. M.D., Gerardo Colon-Otero, M.D., John Stauffer, M.D., and the team at Mayo Clinic Florida for treating and curing Judy’s gastric cancer diagnosed in 2014.

Memorial services will be held 12 p.m. on Friday, February 1, 2019 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Grand, 1416 Grand Avenue, Manitowoc.
