Katherine Ann (Balane) McKinney, 54, of Houston, TX, passed away on Sunday, February 10, 2019. She was born October 9, 1964 in Cheektowaga, NY, the daughter of David A. and Margaret M. (née Zinnen) Balane. Kathy graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1986 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.

She received her CPA in 1987. Her accounting career began with Arthur Andersen in Chicago, later relocating to New Orleans to work at Freeport McMoRan. Kathy then moved to Houston to establish and manage the family business, Northstar Gas.

In the past few years, Kathy was pleased to work at Texas Petroleum Investment Company and do private consulting work. Kathy was an avid tennis player who enjoyed lunch with the ladies at the club. She also delighted in gardening and nurturing her plants.

She supported causes for underprivileged youth and animal shelters. Volunteering her time tutoring elementary students with reading and math brought her much joy. Kathy was a free spirit who loved to listen to music and dance as if no one was watching.

She was a kind-hearted soul who “never met a stranger”. Kathy will be dearly missed by family and friends. Katherine Ann (Balane) McKinney is survived by her parents who live in Bonita Springs, FL; her brother and sister, Michael (Cynthia) Balane of Niles, MI and Susan (Steven) Becker of Naples, FL; and two nieces, Claire and Amanda Balane.

Services will be privately held at St. Agnes Catholic Church and she will be laid to rest in the church’s Columbarium Memorial Wall. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to your local animal shelter or student scholarship fund. Arrangements are being handled by Shikany’s Bonita Funeral Home.
